MG Car Repair: 1979 MG Midget - clutch, clutch kit, moss motors

Question
The car goes in gear when engine is off but won't go in gear when engine is on. I have been told to replace the clutch and I purchased the clutch kit from Moss Motors.  I have also been told the entire engine has to be removed from the car to replace these parts.  If true, how many labor hours should my mechanic charge me for this?

Many thanks.

Answer
Hi Janel,
How did you decide that the clutch was at fault? What tests did you run to decide that? Just because it will not go into gear with the engine running is not a reason to blame the clutch. You should have tested the clutch hydraulic release system first since that is the most likely cause.

If it were the clutch, it is a 7.1 hour job at what ever the shop's labor rate is. Yes, the engine has to be removed to do the job.
