MG Car Repair: inner tie-dods, inner tie rods, gear arm

Question
Ok, this is the deal: I need to change both inner tie-rods due to lot of play of ball-socket (I don't want to replace the whole rack).
On the side they attach to the gear-arm (by screwing I suppose) I don't see any "flat-face", at least two as part of an hexagon, where to use a fix wrench or an adjustable. How do I unscrew the inner rods from the arm? With some kind of visegrip? Are both clockwise thread? Is there a formula? The car is a 1974 MGB GT. Thank you. Vic.

Answer
Hi Vic
You will probably only need to adjust the inner tierod ball joints, not replace them.
There is a locking ring with a thin shoulder.  It can be removed with a pipe wrench or a small chisel.  These rings are not handed, but they are staked (bent inwards).  The component that they stake to has a groove in it to take the stake.  The lock rings are not handed, and they should always be replaced.  Moss part number 310-810 costing $1.10 each)

Once you have removed the lock ring you should be able to adjust the inner ball joint using a pipe wrench.  The housings are not handed, they have regular threads.

Have a look at this exploded diagram:

Do not over-tighten the ball joint.  The outer track rod should be movable by hand, but it should not fall under its own weight.
