MG Car Repair: MG TD Transmission Re-Build, broken bolt, nut bolt

Question
My son and I are attempting a rebuild of a 51 TD transmission. The peg bolts holding the shifting forks appear to be home replacements as the ends on the two we were able to remove appear to have been tapered on a grinding wheel. The third bolt snapped and the and the tapered piece is left preventing removal of the shaft or moving the shift fork. Any suggestions appreciated

Answer
Hi Paul.  Be careful.  Every nut, bolt and stud on your TD gearbox has a metric thread.  I think the peg bolts were 6x1mm (but they could be 5 x 0.7mm)

I would guess that someone tried to make new peg bolts, but they used the wrong thread and they jammed.  You will have to drill out the remains of the broken bolt.  If necessary, you could drill it oversize and fit a Helicoil insert, or make up a new bolt with an oversize thread and re-thread the hole in the fork.
