MG Car Repair: hs4 carb rebuild, e mail address, webber 32

Question
I am in process of totally rebuilding a pair of hs4 AUD326 carbs to replace my Webber 32\36 carb on my 78 mgb. Any suggestions as to the rebuild and setup before I put them on the car? I plan to replace everything I can, including needles and throttle shafts/discs. Thanks for your expert advice, Nate

Answer
Hi Nate
You have asked a question that needs a big reply.  I have written a book on the MGB (Barrie's Notes) and I devoted a whole chapter to the SU carburetters.  Ideally, please buy a copy of my book!

A 78 MGB should have HIF4 carbs, although the earlier HS4 carbs will fit nicely.

Assuming that your engine is not highly modified, you should fit the standard needles.  Depending on whether they are fixed or spring-loaded, you will need either FX or AAF needles.

The throttle discs should be solid.  If you obtain carbs with spring-loaded valves in them, replace the discs with solid ones.

This really is too big a topic for AllExperts.  If you care to send me your e-mail address in another question (marked private, not public) then I may be able to send you some more detailed information.
