MG Car Repair: Car number for 70 Midget, google search, heritage certificate

Question
QUESTION: I have just bought a 70 mg midget I don't know much about the midgets I have a car number GAN5AU/883348 and a eng. number 12CD DA-H 17145 Could you please help me find or tell me how I can look this up. Thank you very much. Mike

ANSWER: Hi Mike.
You say you have a car number GAN5AU/883348 and engine number 12CD DA-H 17145.

GAN5 is the prefix for a Mk III MG Midget, the letters AU are only found on export cars, and the U is specifically North America (including Canada).

The number 883488 looks a bit strange.  They changed to a 12V prefix at G-AN5-105501.  I think you have typed too many digits, or could it be 88334G?

The engine number prefix 12CD refers to an engine with a capacity of approximately 1200cc (1275cc actually).  Once again, the letters AU are for export cars, and the H refers to a High compression engine (8.8:1).  The engine number 17145 looks about right.

QUESTION: Thanks for the info. You are right the last number was G. Its GAN 5 UA/88334 G and is there any where I can go to to find out more on this car. Thank you very much. Mike

Answer
Hi Mike
I would get your car recorded on the Midget Register and ask if they have any history on it.

Go to http://www.midgetregister.com/

Also, for a fee, you can get a Heritage Certificate from the BMIHT (British Motor Industry Heritage Trust).  They should be able to tell you the day it rolled off the production line, the original colour of the paint and interior trim, and even the numbers on the door keys.  Try a Google search.
