MG Car Repair: MG B 1976 Stops Running, accelerator cable, allen wrench

Question
While driving, up/down hill, straight, no matter, it just
dies.  I wait about 4 or 5 minutes, try it again and it fires up and runs again.  New fuel pump/alternator/starter
and various other infusion of money...may have to adjust accelerator cable; believe I'm giving it too much gas; lots of backfiring while warming up if I give it pumps on the pedal - once it warms up, I  barely have to depress the
accelerator to increase speed; get some backup when I accelerate at higher speeds and going up hills...tuneup/timing correction needed?

Answer
Hi Wayne,
Your symptoms do not tell what is wrong and tossing money at the problem will just cost more money. Don't buy any parts for it until you know what is wrong.

If your car came to me in a shop I would have to first run a compression test. (throttle open). Then sent the timing and clean or replace the plugs and check the plug wires, cap and rotor.

Only then if all above is correct can you look at the carburetor and fuel system. First test the fuel pressure at the carburetor. (1.5 to 3 PSI) Check the diaphragm in the top of the carburetor and check that the air cleaner is in place (this car will not run right without it)

If all that is correct try turning the needle adjustment (3mm Allen wrench down in the top pot and be sure there is oil in it) Turn the adjusting screw only about a half turn clockwise.

Somewhere in all that you should find your problem. Don't skip any of it and do it in the sequence I outlined. The tools necessary to run these tests are not expensive and much cheaper then what you have already tossed at it.
