MG Car Repair: 1975 MGB, mg car clubs, car hauling companies

Question
Hi - we live in Texas and the 1975 MGB that was willed to my son is in Florida.  It has some mechanical problems, therefore, is not road worthy for a drive back to Texas.  My son would love to bring it to Texas, but I do not know if it is worth the expense.  Can you help?  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Phillis,
All I can do is give you advice. If your son wants the car you need to check the value to your son of the car. If it were me in your place, I would check a few car hauling companies in FL and in Texas to see what it would cost to haul the car to Texas. Then search out a British car specialist in your area to see what it will take to put the car in operating order. Unless you have family still in FL, it would be difficult to have the car repaired in FL then try to drive it to Texas.

If the car had been in operation and just recently stopped running it may be possible to get it repaired in FL and drive it back to Texas. But you need to keep in mind the car is a classic antique car 35 years old now and I would want to know that it was in very good driving condition to attempt to drive it from FL to Texas. No MG dealers since 1980 and even though there are usually one or more British car specialist shops in almost every city in the US, you won't find any in any small town on the way.

The MGs are usually either a "Driver" or a "Show Car" now and can vary in value from a low of $2500. to a high of $35,000.+
If you add in the value your son may place on the car because it was willed to him then you can see that shipping the car may be an expense you would not mind spending. If your son is mechanically inclined the MG can be a great hobby. Almost every part on the car is still available, even the body itself. Almost every major city in the US have MG car clubs and car shows.
