MG Car Repair: mg tf (rear passenger brake rubbing), rear wheel bearings, handbrake cable

Question
Hi Barry,
My (02) tf 135 sometimes feels as if it's "tracking" (gently trying to steer itself) to the left and has recently started to make a light scraping noise in its rear passenger brake(which look standard compared to the MG branded front calipers),both the noise and tracking issues are occasional and the noise is more prominent when turning right, also the noise only seems to happen once the brakes have warmed up a little.
I popped the wheel off and once I'd secured the car and released the handbrake the hub and disc will rotate by hand though the outside pad rubs very slightly,is this the likely cause of the problem? if so can you suggest a remedy? and if not what else can i do to repair my much loved car?
 Thanks for your time,
    Phill.
P.S. I've been looking for a haynes manual for the car without success, is there one? and if not are there any suitable substitutes?

Answer
Hi Phil.  I am not an expert on the modern MGF/TF series, but I might be able to help you.

If a rear disk is dragging, then it would tend to pull the car to one side.  This can be caused by several faults:

1) The handbrake cable could be partially seizing, prevennting the brake from releasing correctly.
2) The piston in the rear caliper could be partially seized in its bore.
3) The rear wheel bearings could be starting to fail, or they might be incorrectly adjusted.  This would allow the disc to move, causing a rubbing when you go round a corner.

ps - the MGF workshop manual is available from Amazon.  The MG TF is very similar, apart from having sprung suspension.
