MG Car Repair: drivers door coutesy light switch 1974 MGB chrome bumper, bayonet type, purple wire

Question
QUESTION: Hi, I wanted to replace the original broken door operated courtesy light switch, the original had to wires going to it. The Moss replacement is a bayonet type which only requires 1 wire, which I imagine is ground. I tried grounding both leads which I thought should turn on the light, but unfortunatly not. The passenger side works properly as does the switch on the light. Can you help?
Regards,
Jeff

ANSWER: Hi Jeff.  The MGB courtesy light switch should have only one wire going to it.  That wire is Purple with a white stripe.  When the door opens, the switch closes and the wire is earthed.

If you had two wires going to the switch, then your previous setup was a modification, not the original wiring.  My initial guess is that you have an aftermarket alarm fittted to the car, and the driver's door switch was being used as one of the triggers for the alarm.  It would help if you could tell me the colours of the two wires.

QUESTION: You are right, The wires I found and remnant of the switch was to operate the key buzzer. I have to find the wire for the switch. Thanks so much!

Answer
HI Jeff.  Glad to help.  I suggest that you trace the other wire from the passenger side.  Look for a purple wire with a white stripe.  It should be taped to the strengthening bar below the dashboard, ending at a 4-way black bullet connector behind the centre console.  You may have to run a new wire from this connector to the driver's door switch, or you may find that the old wire is still there.
