MG Car Repair: Wiring loom - harness, wiring loom, moss motors

Question
I have inherited a 1977 MGB for which most of the electrical wiring under the hood is a complete disaster.  Melted insulation, bare wires, numerous short circuits and patchwork everywhere.  Nothing electrical works, including the ignition.  Can you recommend a strategy?  I have been looking at aftermarket wire harness kits.

Answer
Hi Steve.  When the wiring is bad, it is dangerous because it could cause an electrical fire.  You must replace the loom (wiring harness).  Make sure you buy the correct loom for a 1977 MGB to USA LHD specification.  Moss Motors are the experts in the USA, and they should know exactly which loom you require.

The main loom goes from the dashboard, through the firewall to the engine compartment, then on round the front of the car to the lights and the horns.  There is a second loom that attaches near the fusebox and runs under the car to the rear lights and the fuel pump.  There is also a small third loom that goes to the gearbox (overdrive and reversing light switches).

The actual rewiring is not too difficult so long as you know the colour codes, which I can help you with.
