MG Car Repair: Cleaning SU fuel pump points, rear bulkhead, emery board

Thanks Barrie.  Do I need to remove the fuel pump form the car to access the points and clean them?

Hi Hugh.  On a 1975 or later MGB the fuel pump points are accessible via the boot (trunk).  

Remove the spare wheel, and behind it you will see a black metal box protruding into the boot space.  Remove the screws that hold it to the rear bulkhead, and you will reveal the top of the fuel pump.  

To reveal the points, pull off the electrical connector, remove the sticky tape from round the plastic top, undo the single 2BA nut that holds the top and the electrical connector, and pull the top.

If the points are badly burnt, you may need to replace them.  If they just need a clean, use an emery board (ask your wife for one, she uses them on her nails).
