MG Car Repair: clutch master cylinder, clutch master cylinder, clutch cylinder

Question
when repairing the clutch cylinder, should both rubber cups be facing the same direction inside the cylinder ?

Answer
Hi Tony.  Yes, for both early and late design of clutch master cylinder, both cups face the same way.  It is essential that both the cups are inserted into the cylinder `ears first'.

If you have an early cylinder, there will be a solid master seal that cups onto the end of the spring, plus a ring-shaped secondary seal that fits in a groove on the end of the piston.

Later cylinders have two ring-shaped cups that fit onto each end of the piston.
