MG Car Repair: clutch, clutch master cylinder, hydraulic failure

Question
hi barrie, the other day I was driving my 1973 mgb and the clutch was operating great. then, after about 30 minutesof driving the clutch would only shift if you push the pedal all the way to the floor. sometimes i couldnt even get it into gear without pumping it 2-3 times.  the clutch reservoir is full and i do not see any leaks. can you please give me some info on what it could be?

Answer
Hi Sheik.  This sounds like a hydraulic failure.  The fact that you are not losing any fluid points to a problem inside the clutch master cylinder.  I would remove the master cylinder and carefully inspect (a) the main rubber cup and (b) the bore of the cylinder.  You may get away with just polishing the cylinder and fitting new seals.  Otherwise, you may have to fit a new master cylinder.
