MG Car Repair: Fuel Pump, electrical problem, fuel pump

Question
I have a 1977 MGB that gets stored every winter. While trying to start it this year, no fuel was coming through the line to the carb. It starts fine when I spray Starting Fluid into the Carb.

I assume that this is a fuel pump issue. How can I test to see if it is the pump that is bad, or if it is an electrical problem, or clogged fuel line?

Answer
Hi Giacomo.  I agree with you - this is a fuel pump problem.  When you turn the ignition on, you should be able to hear the pump ticking before you start the engine.  If you cannot hear it, then the pump needs attention.

If the pump does not tick, try cleaning the points.  On a 1977 MGB the points inside the pump are accessed via a black metal cover inside the boot.

If the pump ticks but does not deliver fuel, then maybe the filter is blocked, but this is most unlikely.
