MG Car Repair: MG midget 1972, wheel spacers, wheel studs

Question
Hello Howard,
Once again thanks for all the help.
To refresh your memory, I have 1972 midget and the suspension is stock. I was recently told by a friend I could install wheel spacers to make the wheel come out abit more.
My concern are the wheel studs being too short. I'd like to replace them with longer ones but haven't got the slightly clue what to look for.
I guess what I'm asking is what size are the stock wheel studs (width and length) and second what is the largest I can get and where? thanks

Answer
Hi Rico,
I have never removed one from a Midget but have from a MGB and I needed to do exactly what you are doing. Some are very hard to drive out of the hub and can be destroyed just taking it out. I found many longer replacements at an auto parts store but the inner shoulder size were always wrong so I had to take one of the longer ones that was too large at the shoulder and turn them down on a lathe to get close and I was then able to install them. The thread size is a standard size on all the MGs so you should be able to find longer ones like I did but you may or may not find one to fit the hole in the hub. The only thing you can do it gamble and knock one out and search at an auto parts store like I did. Measure the ones you have and go to an auto parts store to see what different lengths they can come up with in that thread size before you knock one out to see what the shoulder size is.
