MG Car Repair: follow up on fuel pump question, electric fuel pump, auto parts store

Question
Follow up on fuel pump..

I have decided to put an electric fuel pump mounted in the rear next to gas tank,,,, the new mechanical pump seems to work great for the first 10 miles or so but then as in the old pump, it seem to quit, no fuel at all coming out of the lines, just like a vapor lock,Question 1. should I put a pressure regulator on the line, my pump is rated 2.0 up 7.0

Question 2.do I need to take off the mechanical pump and put a cover over the hold or can I just cut the line's plug them and leave old pump on,If I must take off can I get a cover at local Auto parts store and if not where....

Thanks again for being so helpful

steve

Answer
Hi Steve.  Your carburetters require a pressure of 3.0 psi minimum to 4.5 psi maximum.  If your pump can exceed this, then you need a regulator, or a different pump.  I run mine at 4psi.

No need to remove the mechanical pump, just bridge the two pipes (and make sure the pipe doesn't run too close to anything hot).  If the electric pump ever failed, the old mechanical one might get you home.  Blanking plates are available.  I have read somewhere that one from an old Buick will fit.  Try a scrapyard, or make one.  It is only a flat plate with 2 holes in it.

Let me know how you get on.
