MG Car Repair: fuel pump, electric fuel pump, heat shields

Question
Thanks again for your help.

I did reroute my gas lines on Wed, going to try it out today,, both lines, the one from the gas tank and the one going to the carb, were right next to the engine, I went back of the engine compartment along the fire wall, also got new gas line,,,

I have not been able to locate a heat shield from ant of the books that sell parts, do you know of any place ? There seems to be some available for other models but not a 1976....... After trying all these steps, if it doesn't work , do you think a new electric fuel pump, mounted in the back of the car may help ?

Thanks so much

Answer
Hi Steve.  Sounds as though you are doing all the right things.

I don't know where you would get a heat shield for a 76 Midget.  Your car has a Triumph Spitfire engine, and I am not an expert on Triumphs.  Try doing a Spitfire search on the web.

I have a 1955 MG TF and nobody made heat shields for that model, so I made my own from a sheet of aluminium.  It worked so well that I had more made in stainless steel using mine as a template, and so far there are 50 of them out there.  They all seem to be working well.

If your problems persist, then a rear-mounted pump may be the way to go.  The theory is that atmospheric pressure is 15 psi and the pump develops 3 psi, so lines on the pressure side are at 18 psi, but lines on the suction side are only at 12 psi.  The higher the pressure, the more heat it takes before the fuel boils in the lines.  Do not be tempted to push the fuel through both pumps, the pressure will be too high for the carb.  Bypass the mechanical one.

Please let me know how you get on.
