MG Car Repair: follow up on fuel pump question, question thanks, streight

Question
Thanks again so much for your help on my feul pump.

I did order a new pump and received it today,,, when I ordered they said the old streight arm was no longer made but the new pump would have a "spacer" that went with the new pump,,, I compaired the two pumps together and they are different, the new one is a little longer and when I put the spacer with it, it made them the same,,,, my question is do I put the spacer on the new pump ? I am afraid it will make my studs  that it mounts to, to short, if so what will I do about that ?

Thanks again , you have been such a great help, I am hoping to get the little car out this weekend.

Answer
Hi Steve.  If the new pump requires a spacer, then it also needs an extra gasket (one each side of the spacer) as well.  Do a trial fit of the new pump, with spacer, and see how far the nuts will go onto the old studs.  If the studs do not protrude through the nut, then you need longer studs.  Alternatively, you could remove the studs and use two longer bolts instead.  The threads will probably be 5/16 UNC, not metric.  In the USA, ANC bolts will do nicely.
