MG Car Repair: Best way to use a trolley jack / stands, wheel hubs, trolley jack

Question
Barrie,
Before I start jacking up my MGB GT what's the best place to position a trolley jack & axle stands in terms of avoiding potential structural issues. I'm trying to avoid anywhere near the sills (whoever replaced them didn't fit normal jacking points anyway). I had intended to jack up the rear via the centre of the axle and put axle stands between the axle centre and wheel hubs. Is this okay on an MGB and what about the front? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Gary.  Please be very careful.  I never use the original jacking points, they are prone to corrosion and I have seen several that have failed with disastrous consequences.

I do not recommend working on a car suspended under 4 axle stands, either.  I do not consider it safe.  Also, the area where you are working must be absolutely level and solid (such as a concrete pad).  If possible, leave the jack in place AS WELL for added safety.

At the rear, you should use the trolley jack under the diff, and use two axle stands, one under each side of the axle tube.  For stability you should position them as far apart as possible.

At the front, you may need to lift the car using the main chassis legs, unless you have a low entry jack that fits under the spring pan.  The main chassis legs are box sections that are about 6 inches inboard of the sills.  Do one side at a time.  The best place for axle stands is under the inner suspension pivots, just inboard of the spring pans.
