MG Car Repair: handbrake, brake drums, brake shoe

Question
The handbrake on my 1978 MGB is stcuk and I cannot release it. What can I do?

Answer
Hi Lori.  Either you have pulled it on so tight that you cannot release it, or else the cable has rusted internally and will not release.

If you have pulled it on too hard, then you can release the pressure by undoing the brake shoe adjusters.  These are square-headed bolts that protrude from the back of the brake drums, near the top.  Remember to re-adjust the brakes once you have released the lever.

If the cable has rusted solid (which often happens), you will have to replace the cable. MGB cables are cheap, so trying to lubricate the old one is a waste of time and effort.  Just cut the old cable and throw it away.
