MG Car Repair: wiring schemitic, ballast resistor, wiring loom
Coil wiring
ANSWER: Hi Stan.  It is not normal for the ballast resistor to blow.  It is a resistive wire inside the wiring loom.  You could check it with an ohm meter or a 12 volt bulb.  Turn the ignition key to the `running' position and test the voltage at the + terminal of the coil.  It should have 2 wires attached to it, both white with a light green stripe.  It should be about 8 volts.  Remember to switch the ignition off when you have finished.

I attach part of the wiring loom.

QUESTION: hi barrie. this will be a great help.on wiring diagram, what is #4? did the diagram come out of haynes manual for mg.midget and if so what page because i have one. one white-green goes to the selinoid the other i will trace. i will do the test after Xmas and get back to you. have a happy holiday.  Stan.

Answer
Glad to help.  #4 is the starter solenoid, #19 is the fusebox and #39 is the coil.  One White/green wire goes to the solenoid, the other disappears into the loom, changes colour to pink (resistive wire), changes colour again to white, and comes out at the fusebox.  Do not disconnect any wires before doing the test.

I must admit that I cheated and used an MGB wiring diagram because my Midget manual stops at 1974.  I believe the wiring is the same, but please come back to me if your car is different.
