MG Car Repair: MGTF, mg car club, mg specialists

Question
My girlfriend has an 03 MGTF. The windows have stopped working before and now have stopped working when fully open. Please can you advise how to shut these or how much rougly a garage would charge to get this problem sorted?
We live in woking and really don't know of any MG specialists in the area?
Thanks in advance,

Greig

Answer
Hi Greig.  I do not claim to be an expert on the modern MGTF.  My knowledge relates to the classic MG TF made between 1953 and 1955.

However, this sounds like a typical problem with electric windows.  I am a bit concerned that it has happened on both sides.  Possibly, the window got a bit stiff and slowed down.  This increases the load on the motor, so it takes more current.  Trying to operate both windows simultaneuusly doubles the load.  It is possible that the increased load caused the fuse to blow, so now neither window works, and they just happen to be stuck in the down position.

I would start by checking the fuse.  If it is blown, replace it and then operate one window only.  If it is sluggish, lubricate the channel that the glass slides in with WD40 and operate the window up and down a few times.  You should be able to hear it freeing up and getting quicker.  Do the same with the other window.

A quick squirt of WD40 is the sort of preventive maintenance that I would do once a month to avoid it happening again.

If you cannot do it yourself, then I have found two garages recommended by the MG Car Club near you:

Surrey Sports & Classics, Ripley (014483 223830)
Market Square Garage, Petworth (01798 344484)

Problems like this can be hard to trace, so I could not estimate the time it would take for them to fix it, and I don't know what their hourly rate is.  Why not ask them before they do the work?
