MG Car Repair: MG Midget gearbox rear oil seal replacement, tail shaft, rear seal

Question
My 1970 Midget is leaking excessive gear oil after a motor change. I must have somehow damaged the rear seal. I am trying to change the seal without removing the engine again but am having no luck. Is there a tool or some special trick to getting that oil seal off without having to remove the whole engine and trans.? I can barely reach it in the tunnel to get a good grip on it.

Answer
Hi Joel,
The seal has a metal cup around it and is a press fit on the tailshaft housing. I never tried to replace one in the car but you may try to remove the shift tower cover and maybe make a tool to drive it off of the tail shaft. Another option would be to make a long hook attachment to a slid hammer and try to pull it from the rear.
