MG Car Repair: MGB 72 6 volts batteries, mgb owners, auto parts stores

Question
Hi Howard,

my batteries do noy seem to hold power for more than a couple of days. on top when i drive the car i can ear a small 'click' (like may be a relay going on/of?) behind my seat where the batteries are.

If the batteries are dead i use a jumper start and it goes very fast.
As the 6 volts batteries are quite expensive i would like to know if there is a way to make sure they are dead before i buy new ones.

Thanks a lot in advance
Nicolas (french lover of MGBs living in Chicago)

Answer
Hi Nicolas,
Most auto parts stores have a battery load tester to test the condition of a battery before you buy one. Call around. But you should charge both up before you take the batteries to them.
Other things that can cause your problem is bad cable connections and/or a bad alternator.
Because each 6v battery casts at much as a 12v, most MGB owners just switch to one 12v battery. You may have to modify one of the battery boxes to support the 12v battery at the base.
