MG Car Repair: emergency brake adjustment, moss motors, chassis number

Question
I have a '77 MG Midget and trying to adjust emergency brake.  Manuel show adjustment at rear wheels, but there are no adjustment and locknut on the cable at the wheels.  Where should it be?

Answer
Hi George.  There was a change of design at (approximately) chassis number 182000.  After that, the adjuster was moved to the front end of the cable, where it attaches to the handbrake operating lever underneath the car.

It is most unusual for the handbrake cable to require any adjustment.  The only time I ever adjust the cable is when fitting a new one.  Normally, brake adjustment is done using the adjusters on the brake backplates.  If you still have a problem after adjusting the shoes, then it is probable that the handbrake cable has partially seized internally and you need a new cable.  They cost about $24 from Moss Motors.  When ordering the later cable, it is important that you get the correct one.  There are two different lengths depending on whether you have steel wheels or wire wheels.
