MG Car Repair: 1970 MGB Roadster Electrical Problem, left turn signal, brake light switch

Question
QUESTION: My 1970 MGB Roadster has an electrical problem that I cannot figure out.  When I use the brakes and left turn signal it causes the brake lights, turn signals and gauges (tachometer, fuel and temp) to stop working.  If I turn the car off and try it at a later point in the day - everything works - until I use the brakes/left turn signal again.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks - Jim

ANSWER: Hi Jim,
The only way to correct the problem is to get the car in it's failed mode and test with a test light of a volt meter using a wiring diagram.

In your case you need to use something to hold the brake pedal down with the turn signal on when it is in it's failed mode. Then follow the diagram from the load checking at each connection toward the power supply. You should only follow one circuit. Usually when you correct one circuit it will correct all of the problems. Since the brake lights are one of the failing circuits you would use that one because it is the simplest circuit. Start by testing at the bulb then inside the trunk to the first joint and so on towards the brake light switch and on to the fuse box and ignition switch and on to the battery supply at the solenoid and on to the battery.

With this method it is impossible not to find the fault. If you don't have a diagram let me know and I will put one on my web site for you to copy.

QUESTION: Hi Howard - I tried the clicking on the link to the diagram and index but when directed to the site recived a message stating that "the page you requested is unavailable".  Is there another way for me to access the information?

Thanks - Jim

Answer
Hi Jim,
The diagram is at the address shown but you have to leave a space between 70 and MGB but the address is not correct on the index. It should read /70 MGB %26 GT21x1.jpg  (Spaces where shown) (that's my Bo-bo as I should have named the picture without spaces and proof read what I typed) Duh!  As you may know the first part of the address is my web site and is correct.
Let me know if it is still a problem so I might rename the pictures and re-upload them.
