MG Car Repair: Mg Midget Mk111 1976, starter solenoid, fuse panel

Question
I have just bought the MG for restoration and also bought a workshop manual, but it does not cover the wiring color and what pin numbers to put them on at the back of the ignition. In the book all show only three tags at the back, but this has five which the previous owner took apart without putting down where they came from. can you help thanks Alan

Answer
Hi Alan,
I have a US and a UK wiring diagram but neither show much about which pin is which. The UK version shows only four wires but shows the location of a pin labeled #1 and #5. Pin #1 shows the white w/red tracer wire which is the starter solenoid wire. and Pin #5 gets a white w/green wire which is a radio (if fitted) The other pins are not labeled and get the brown (power) wire and the other pin gets a double white which is the coil resistor wire and the # 5 pin on the fuse panel.

The US version does not show any pin ID on the ignition switch but does show that the center pin should get the brown power wire. White to coil resistor wire, white w/red tracer to the starter solenoid, Slate to the anti dieseling valve and Purple w/pink tracer to a radio if fitted.

You should be able to take a ohm meter or a test light and put the sw in it's different positions and determine which wire goes where by writing down what pin connects to what pin in the different SW positions.
