MG Car Repair: oil cap, creamy mayonnaise, shane white

Question
white smoke comming out of the oil cap it run grat what is it ?

Answer
Hi Shane.  White smoke coming from the oil cap is water vapour.

This can happen when a car is used for short journeys.  The engine never gets really hot, so water vapour builds up inside.  If you look inside the cap, is it full of a creamy `mayonnaise'?  If so, you need to use flushing oil to get rid of it, and then do an oil and filter change.

Also, white smoke can be a sign that the head gasket is leaking.

The engine may run beautifully, but keep an eye on the level of water in the radiator.  If you are losing water, you may well have a problem.  Better to fix it than to ruin a nice engine.
