MG Car Repair: 1975 mg midget turn signals, turn signal flasher, hazard switch

Question
Hello Barrie,
I own a 1975 midget (USA). I currently have a turn indicator problem. When the turn indicator switch is on (for right or left turns), the light on the dash as well as the external lights stay on, but do not blink. If I push in the hazard switch, all of the lights (external and internal) go off. The hazards are not working as well. Does this sound like the hazard switch?
If I play with the hazard switch and turn it off and on, sometimes the turn indicators will not light up at all. If I play with it enough, they will go back on but not blink.
Thanks,
Craig

Answer
Hi Craig
When switched ON, the hazard switch isolates the turn indicator relay so that it cannot interfere with the 4 hazard lights.  In the OFF position it should not interfere with the turn signals.

You do not say whether the hazard switch works, causing all 4 turn indicators to flash, but I guess it does.

I think you have 2 problems.  The hazard swich has dirty internal contacts (probably through lack of use) and the turn signal flasher unit has failed.

Note that there are two flasher units, one for the turn indicators and another larger unit for the hazard function.  The flasher unit is clipped to the bulkhead near the ignition switch.
