MG Car Repair: 1974 MG Midget, mg midget, fuel supply

Question
My MG won't start.  I can get it to crank and even fire up if I shoot starting fluid into the sparkplug holes but it won't run.  Spark is good in all holes.  I'm thinking fuel pump isn't functioning.  What can I do?

Answer
I agree with you, Bill, it sounds like a fuel problem.

Can you hear the pump ticking when you turn the ignition key to position 1 (before you hit the starter)?  It should tick a few times and then stop.  If you cannot hear it, then it has probably failed.

Is there an in-line fuel filter fitted in the fuel supply line to the carbs?  Does it look dirty?  Could be blocked.
