MG Car Repair: problem following oil filter change, rubber gasket, oil bucket

Question
Today I was getting my '71 MGB ready for the summer.  I did an oil change and filter change.  Once completed I started up and to my amazement all my oil dumped out at the bottom of the oil filter.  I removed the filter and repaced it again tight & the same thing happened.  I then put the old filter back on and the same thing again.  I am at a my 'wits end'.  I checked the stem of the base and all seems fime as well as the shaft the filter screws onto.  I will have to go to town tomorrow to get more oil as I did not expect this major problem & removed the oil bucket below the engine before starting up.  Bad move!  What a mess!  Do you have any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Don,
You need to look carefully at the filter base to see if an old gasket has stuck to the filter adapter. Also be sure to oil the rubber gasket on the new filter before you install it and fill the filter too.
Clean the oil off of the area and look with a small mirror and light when the engine is started to see where the oil is coming from.
