MG Car Repair: 73 B, fuel mileage, auto parts stores

Question
Hi Howard this year my engine has knocking valves in 3rd and 4th gear on acceleration which i don't remember having last year. I have run through the tank of gas that i parked it with and put some super in it today, could the old gas be the problem i didn't stabilize the gas.I am also thinking of swapping my su's for a Weber, but other mgers have told me that i will lose the throaty sound  my B makes is that true? I can't seem to ever have the su's tuned properly although the car runs well. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Andre,
If you are talking about "Pinging" sound, that is detonation not valves and it is very destructive to the engine so you MUST correct the problem ASAP. Yes it could be the old gas or wrong ignition timing. Fill it up with high test gas and add a can of octane booster available at most auto parts stores. If that don't stop it check the ignition timing and the heat range of the spark plugs.
I seen dyno tests that indicate that the SUs produce more horse power than the Webers do. Also better fuel mileage. I like Webers for some cars but not for the MGB nor the Midget.
