MG Car Repair: Removing temp sending unit from head, temp gauge, temperature gauge

Question
1098 engine/head. Temperature gauge (dual guage with oil pressure and temperature) suddenly stopped working. I want to remove the sending unit from the head to test. I've tried pulling the sending unit from the head (gently) but it will not give. I've also tried turning it slightly to loosen it up. It won't, however, let go.

How does one correctly remove this? Is it pulled directly out (and I simply need to apply more force), or is another, more subtle approach required?

Thanks,
Bill

Answer
Hi Bill,
The bulb part of the temp gauge is just stuck as it is just held in by the large nut. If the gauge has died there is no repair that I know of for the gauge so you can get rough with the bulb part. We have had to get rough with the ones that were stuck tight.

Be gentle with the new on as that is a tube with a fluid in it and you need to be careful not to kink the tube nor twist it and be sure to secure the tube at the head and the body at the rear of the head and make several loops between the head and the body so the movement of the engine does not bend the tubing as the engine flexes.
