MG Car Repair: throttle linkages and springs, throttle return spring, throttle shaft

Question
QUESTION: HI -

I have a 1979 MG Midget 1500.  The springs in the throttle linkages are broken.  I was able to order one from Victoria British.  But, I cannot find anywhere that carries the smaller spring.

Also, there seems to be no diagrams anywhere that show how the two springs in the throttle linkages fit into the different levers and parts of the linkages.

Can you help?

Jeff Z

ANSWER: Hi Jeff,
I only know of one spring on the throttle linkage and it is a compression spring on a rod. Give me the part number or the Victoria British URL of the page you ordered the part from. Maybe I can ID what you have.

QUESTION: Howard -

Thanks.  I am trying to put together the throttle return spring (part # 3-6075 from Victoria British Catalogue with the Fast Idle Lever and another smaller spring that has no part number listing.

In looking at the Throttle shaft (part # 3-6802), it looks like the throttle return sping somehow fits together with the Fast Idle Lever and another smaller spring which are hooked together somehow by the two springs and then a nut and washer.

How does this all go together, and what is the correct rotation for the throttle shaft position when I start assembly on the throttle shaft?

Thanks

ANSWER: The Victoria British diagram shows the sequence of parts but I agree it is not clear plus there were several different versions of the Stromberg carburetors that made it more difficult to ID the arrangement of the springs and levers. See if this picture is any better. Even though it is of a manual choke system it may be close enough on the throttle linkage.
Let me know,

Thanks for the reply.

I put everything back together using common sense as my guide since there is no technical tips available and reinstalled the carburetor.

Now, the car immediately revs up to 2500 -3000 rpm.  What is that about?  Any suggestions?

Answer
Jeff, What was wrong with the picture I sent? Was it not your carb?

When an engine revs to 2500 to 3000 RPM on start up, you either have the choke fast idle set too high or you have the throttle stop screws set too high or you have a large intake leak.

All engines need a lot of air to run at that RPM so look for the reason air is entering the intake.
