MG Car Repair: 77 MGB, clutch plate, clutch master

Question
Hi, my 77 MGB is now difficult to shift into 3rd and 4th gears while up-shifting.  I replaced my clutch master and slave cylinders recently and now this problem has started.  Any help with how to repair this would be extremely appreciated?

Answer
Hi Van
Are you sure that this is only a problem in 3rd and 4th?  If it was something to do with the replacement of the master & slave cylinders, then I would have expected a problem in every gear.

With the car stationary and the handbrake firmly on, press the clutch pedal down to the floor and start the engine.  Then raise your foot until the clutch starts to bite.  Does it seem to be very early, half way up, or almost at the top of its travel?  Was it like that before you changed the cylinders?

If it bites very near the floor, that usually means the system still has bubbles in it and it needs bleeding again.  If it bites very near the top of its travel, then I would suspect that the clutch plate is worn out.

Let me know how you get on.

(By the way, why did the cylinders need replacing, and are you sure that the new ones are the same diameter as the old ones?)
