MG Car Repair: Positive side of the coil, useless info, voltage sources

Question
Hi Howard,
My renovation of the 74 Midget continues.  First, thanks for all the help so far.  You are a Godsend.

I have two wires coming from the harness and attaching to the positive side of the coil.  One drops full voltage, the other measures 4.8V.  Both are on while the ignition is in the start and on position.  According to the schematics in the service manual, there should only be one wire attaching to the coil.  The coil I bought is a 12V coil, so I'm not sure if there should be dual voltage sources.  Unfortunately, one of the previous owners did not cover the engine compartment when when the car was painted, so all of the wires are white (all well as much of the engine).  Do you know what the low voltage wire is?  Should I reattach it to the coil?  Is it healthy for the ignition to feed the coil 12V continueously?

Answer
Corey, you are wasting your time trying to ID wires by their voltage. It takes only a minute to scratch off the paint on a wire. The 74 Midget only had one wire on the (+) side of the coil and it is colored white with no tracer color. There are two White w/black tracer wires on the (-) side of the coil and it is useless info to test the voltage on either one. Just scratch the paint off of the wires near the ends so you can ID which wire goes where. No other color belongs on the coil. Yes, the coil should be a 12volt coil.
