MG Car Repair: 1972 MG, electronic ignition systems, roadster factory

Question
We have a Mg that starts and shuts off if you move around the coil and wires it will lose spark then regain spark. It will start then cut right out its not the fuel. it has the original spark box in it, if it is the ignition box what is a good aftermarket replacement. Thanks

Answer
If you have the original Opus/Lucas igniter it is a wonder it still works as they were sometimes replaced several times back when the car was new.
You need to move one wire at a time to see if a wire is broken inside it's insulation. Thus track down where the problem is.

As for recommending a replacement. NO WAY!!! Murphy and his law dictates that as soon as I say buy this or that ignition system it will leave you at 3:00 AM in the middle of nowhere and you will not have any bars on your cell phone.

I will tell you the "Pros" & "Cons" of electronic vs pointed ignition systems.
The good point of electronic ignition systems is, You don't have to clean or adjust anything. The bad points are, They cost much more than points and condensers and when (not IF) they die not even the man who designed and built the thing can fix it.

The good points of points and condensers are, they are cheep so you can carry spares in the car and when (not IF) they die you can usually fix them yourself out on the road or replace them.
The bad point is that they require maintenance. (adjustment and lube)

There are very few optional electronic ignition systems for the MG but you can purchase them at most of the British car parts suppliers like,
Engel Imports, The Roadster Factory, Moss Motors, Victoria British and British Parts North West to name a few. They all have web sites and toll free numbers.
