MG Car Repair: wiring/ no spark, spark plug wires, wiring loom

Question
hello howard.
i have a 1975 mg midget. it was stored under a tarp in the woods for a while. the engine turns over, but wont spark. i have done EVERYTHING! i have replace the coil, distributor cap, contact points(its a triumph distributor), condenser, and spark plug wires. it wont spark and im almost POSITIVE that it is the wiring. im not getting 12 volts to the coil. can i go to lowes and get some insilated wire and some clips, cut open the wiring loom, and just rewire it? tell me if this is a good idea. thanks.

Answer
Hi Cicil,
Not at this point as you don't have enough info to condemn the wiring yet. The minimum tools you need is a wiring diagram and a test light. If you don't have a diagram let me know and I will put one on my web site for you to copy.

Did you disconnect the (+) wire on the coil and turn the key to "Ign" to test the wire for power? There should have been two white w/light green tracer wires on the (+) side of the coil. One supplies power from the ignition switch to a resistor wire to the coil and the other supplies direct 12v to the coil in the "Start" position only.
