MG Car Repair: jump start, dzus fasteners, car electrics

Question
how do i jump start a 1967 mg roadster when the battery is dead?

Answer
1967 was a changeover year.  Cars built up to GHN3 138800 were positive earth.  Cars from GHN4 138801 were negative earth.  If your car is positive earth, then the procedure is a bit more complicated, and it is essential that you do not allow the bodywork of one car to be connected to the other.  Don't even allow an open door to touch the other car.

Also, please consider the car providing the jump start, because many modern cars have expensive electronics which could be damaged if you try to use them as the power source.  BMWs are particularly sensitive to this.  I cannot accept any responsibility for damage that you may do to the donor car electrics if you follow my advice.

OK, assuming you want to do it, get some LONG jump leads of good quality.  Uncover the batteries, which are hidden under an access plate beneath the rear carpeted area behind the seats.  The plate is fixed with 5 DZUS fasteners.

Connect the black jump lead to the negative terminal of the MG batteries, and then to the negative side of the donor battery.  Next, connect the red lead to the positive side of the MG batteries and finally to the positive side of the donor battery.  If there is a BIG spark, you have got the connections wrong, so stop and check everything.

Note that the MG has two 6-volt batteries connected together in the middle, so you you must only connect to the outermost terminals.  Start the donor car and run the engine at a fast idle.  Now try to start the MG.  Once the MG is running, disconnect in the reverse sequence.
