MG Car Repair: fuel coming out of the char. canister, vent tubes, charcoal canister

Question
I have a problem that recently arose while driving my 71 mgb.  I noticed the smell of gas and when I got home noticed there was gas coming out of the vent tube from the char. canister under the hood.  Upon looking things over I discoverd gas being pushed thru the vent tubes coming off the carb which are HIFs. I am using a replacement fuel pump, the kind that looks like a little box and it's worked fine until now.  I have notice the thing is becoming increasingly noisy. Could it be the fuel pump pushing too much pressure.  I have checked the carb's floats and they are free

Answer
Hi Eric,
Yes, it is possible so you need to check fuel pressure. You should not see any over 3 PSI. I found most SU float valves can only handle 1.5 to a max of 3 PSI.
When the charcoal canister has been wet with fuel it is destroyed and should not be used. At the dealerships I worked in, we tried to locate a source for the activated charcoal but never found one, but that was 30+ years ago.
