MG Car Repair: fuel pump, 76 Midget, test light, fuel pump

Question
I was not getting any power to a new fuel pump..traced the wire to the coil
where I cleaned up the connections with no luck. When I power directly from the
battery, I get the pump to run. So now, with the pump powered directly from the
battery, I can start the car, but it immediately dies. Do I need to replace the coil?

Answer
Michael, why do you want to replace the coil when the engine dies? There are hundreds of parts that can cause an engine to die, why do you want to replace the coil?
Also, If there is no power on the white wire with the key on, the engine can not possibly even start at all because that is the ignition power wire.
You need to take a 12v test light and a wiring diagram and start testing the ignition (white wire) circuits. If you don't have a diagram let me know and I will put one up on my web site so you can copy it.
