MG Car Repair: MGB starting, fuel pump, 8 years

Question
When I did start my MGB 1980 for the last 8 years I would turn the key and there was a ticking sound and the ignition light would flash quickly then stop and I would turn the key and start the car.  Now, I turn the key and there is not ticking and the ignition light comes on but it turns over but won't start.  I am wondering what it could be and how to check for it.   Thank you!  Mark  I replaced the batter a few months ago.

Answer
Hi Mark,
The ticking sound was probably the fuel pump and when you don't hear it then it is not running. Do this, turn the key on and bump the metal part of the fuel pump with a hammer handle. Be careful not to hit the plastic cover. If the pump then starts to click, it is then pumping. It is normal for the pump to start clicking when you first turn the key on and then the ticking should slow down and only click very slowly.
