MG Car Repair: Starter will not turn when key is turned to on position., spade terminals, starter solenoid

Question
I am just finishing up a ground up resort on a 1975 Midget. I have put power to the system and have checked all lighting, which now work. Had some wiring harness and connector issues. I have now tried to first turn over the engine with the starter without fuel or coil connected. Nothing happens. Starter did snip when power was applied before mounting to the rear plate. I still have the original start solenoid. How do I check the solenoid if it's any good? Also which wires (w/G, w/R, B, B, B) do I check for voltage at that location? Looking for some direction.

Answer
Hi Keith,
The starter solenoid has two large posts and two small flat spade connectors. The two small flat spade terminals are usually different sizes. The larger gets the white w/brown wire from the starter relay and the smaller one gets the White w/light green wire from the positive side of the coil. The two large threaded post get the starter on one and the battery and several flat spade terminals for all of the plain brown wires. Some aftermarket solenoids had both small flat spade terminals the same size but it is easy to test. first connect up the starter on one of the threaded posts and the battery and all of the plain brown wires on the other. Now take a jumper wire and attach it to the battery post on the solenoid and touch it to each of the other small flat spade terminals. One of them will activate the solenoid. That is the terminal you need to connect the white w/brown tracer to. The other one gets the white W/ light green tracer wire. There should not be any black wires to the solenoid.
One of the first tools you need to work on any electrical system is a wiring diagram.
