MG Car Repair: wiring problems, mgb tourer, fuse block

Question
hi,undergoing total restoration of 1968 mgb tourer, i'm at wiring stage with new loom , i've connected everything up as per wiring diagram,but have hit a few problems;
switching ignition to on , cant get wipers ,heater , indicators, fuel gauge ,fuel pump ,to work .the indicators work when engine turned over as does fuel gauge but registers full   when empty . a simple bulb tester on my 2 way fuse block (white+ green wires side) does not light up when ignition switched on(new ignition) but does so when engine turned over.ie; no live to switch side of fuse unit when ignition on but there is when engine is cranked.
i live in yorkshire ,u.k. but cant find any sites as informative and helpfull as yours, i know info is for usa versions only but was hoping you could point me in right direction. thanks alot.

Answer
Hi Simon,
You have all the tools (test light and wiring diagram) all you need to do is pick ONLY one of the items and track the current from power to load a point at a time. Some mechanics go the other way starting at the load (item that does not operate) and follow the trail with your test light to the power source.
Forget all the other items that don't work until you complete the circuit tests of the one circuit you pick to test. Always pick the easiest one to read on the diagram. I like to always start at the power source and head toward the load (item that does not operate).
Most of the time you will find what ever you find wrong on the one you pick will be what is causing the rest not to operate correctly.
Also never try to think what might be wrong it can lead you down a wrong trail. Follow the diagram only.
A mentor I had once told me that the diagram never forgets the correct trail but you brain can.
