MG Car Repair: gas tank, nuts and bolts, radiator shop

Question
i have a mg midget that's been sitting for 22 years....do i drop the gas tank and clean it out or is there another way to clean it?.......

Answer
Hi Bill,
If you have rust and sediment in the tank you can try to clean it yourself or send it out to a radiator shop that does that kind of work. (You may have to call a few to find one that does)
I try to clean my own by hanging the tank up right from ropes and put a gallon or two of diesel fuel in the tank and a couple of hand fulls of nuts and bolts and shake the tank a lot. I often left it up for a couple of days and would shake it every so often, then drain out the diesel fuel and wash it out with a hose and remove all of the nuts and bolts. Be sure to first remove the level sending unit and put a blank plate over the hole. I rinse mine out with a hose and put the open filler neck on an exhaust pipe of a car and let the car run for a while until the tank is warm to the touch to dry out any left over water from the final rinse.
