MG Car Repair: No Spark, coil wire, blue spark

Question
I have a 67 midget that has been sitting for 12 years. After changing the coil, points (gap at .015), rotor, cap and wires I still get no spark. I have power to the coil on the + side with key on. Am I missing something?

Answer
Hi Mike,
Turn the engine over until the points are open and turn the key on and remove the coil wire from the cap (if it is the plug in type) and hold the wire about 1/8 in from the head while you short the two contacts (points) together with a screwdriver or such. Each time you short the points together and break the contact, the wire should jump a blue spark. You can just attach a spark plug to the end of the wire and lay the plug on any metal part of the engine if you fear getting shocked by the wire.
The points (contact set) ground the coil which charges the coil and when the points open the charge (field) collapses and the field transfers to a secondary winding in the coil which is attached to the coil wire. Since the collapsed field has no place to go, it jumps across the spark plug.
Let me know,
Howard
