MG Car Repair: rod & main bearings, main bearings, rod bearing

Question
lost oil pressure at normal operating speed started to hear slight knock and shut down vehicle immediatly, after engine cooled slight knock at start up, oil pressure came back ran fine, oil pressure dropped as engine warmed up. removed oil pump badly worn, pulled connecting rod, some bearing scarred. only bearings damaged, whats the chance to damage to main bearings?

Answer
Hi Ken,
That depends on the cause. If a rod bearing went out the mains would not normally be harmed. It is very rare to see a oil pump on a MGB go bad so I have to believe something else was the cause. You can pull a couple of main caps to see if the mains are damaged also.
I never recommend just sticking in bearings and an oil pump as too many other parts are effected by the loss of oil pressure.
When bearings are damaged it is time to pull the engine and go through it because what ever caused the problem may just wipe out everything you do and then you have to fix it right anyway.
I will put up an article on how to rebuild an engine on my website in the next day or so. You should read it if for no other reason to know what you are facing.
