MG Car Repair: mgb, wheel cars, splines

Question
thanks for the advise on the wiring problem.turned out the wire on the back of the alternator slipped partially out of its connection and was either separate or arcing.  here's another problem. when i down shift in low speeds or am in reverse i hear a single metal clunking noise from the left rear.not sure about right side.the mgb i had years ago had this i think. is there something typical of mg's that causes this?

Answer
Gary, it depends if it is a wire wheel or disk wheel. It is common on wire wheel cars when the spinner is not kept tight or has not had the splines cleaned and regreesed every few months. Also on wire wheel cars and some disk wheel cars the axle is a separate part from the hub and the large nut could be loose and causing the hub to axle spline to work loose.
