MG Car Repair: 1974 MGB - clutch problem?, clutch fluid, clutch pedal

Question
Hi Howard - I have a 1974 MGB (recently purchased). The car was driving just fine until last week. My problem developed while on a longish (100km) drive. I can shift gears when the engine is not running but can no longer shift while the engine is on (even when it is only idling). What is your best guess as to the root cause - a clutch issue or perhaps a fluid issue as a friend has suggested? For what it is worth - I was getting a "hissing" sound (like air escaping) out through the top of the gear shift and into the car for about 40 kms before the problem began. I can also report that the problem began somewhat gradually (i.e. the gear shifting became progressively harder before it became impossible).

Many thanks

Answer
Hi Mark,
It is most likely a clutch hydraulic problem. First check the clutch fluid (DOT 4) and check the clutch pedal for free play and feel. It should only have about one inch of free play and feel firm as soon as the one inch of free play is passed. There are other things that can cause it but that is the most common.
