MG Car Repair: removal of rear half axles, air impact wrench, cotter pin

Question
I'm helping a friend with his MG GT.  He's removed the rear end to upgrade the suspension setup, bushings, etc.  He is also addressing the Salsbury "clunk" while the rear end is off.  The problem is the the entire assembly spins, making removal of the hub nut impossible.  Is there a way to remove the axles while the rear end is off the car?

Answer
You can remove the axle and hub out of the differential by removing the four nuts and bolts holding the brake backing plate on. This will allow your to extract the axle hub and all from the housing. However, if you want to remove the large nut on the end of the axle just remove the cotter pin and use an air impact wrench to disassemble the axle and hub etc.
